    Racing at Meydan

My first impression of the opening race seeing my figs was that Interpret should improve past Surfer who looks to benefit from a run anyway.

Bar these two it's a weak race & I reckon he's up to it too, can get 5/s William Hills?

    2.30 4 MDN 3Y+ (85+? RATING ODDS

    Surfer - Improved aw debut Dec 11 - 126 1/2f

    Interpret - 7l's clr o 3rd/14 FTO Meyd Nov 12 - rels inc 132rpr 10f Invasor - DP = 5-2-6-0-1 (14) DI = 2.50 CD = 0.71 DSp! 113 4/1

    Fa'Iz 97
    Midnight Moon 95

& then realised they both had worst draws from the RP Analysis:

"SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: In 30 races over C&D featuring a full field, stall 14 has only produced one winner (the smart Musir), while only two winners have emerged from 13 (Rutland Boy, who followed up off 15lb higher, and Group-horse Skysurfers), but here a couple of the main players have between them drawn the widest two gates.

INTERPRET, a half-brother to top-class dirt performer Invasor, got the idea too late when a closing second to Dubai Iconic (due to run 4.10) on his recent debut over 7f here and is open to a deal of improvement, especially now up in distance. He's furthest out in 14, but might get away with it in a race lacking depth, and the form horse is drawn next to him.

Surfer, who will come from stall 13, boasts an official mark of 106 after a number of solid efforts in defeat last season, including in a couple of the UAE Classics. He's no stranger to going wide and clearly sets a high standard for Interpret."

Bit dissapointing, ran 7lb'ish below his debut maybe best 'fresh?

Time of the meet went to the last race & both the first two ran personal bests & could be of further interest this winter?

My figures had a good day today with three top rated's winning including Furnace @ 12/s - going to have to publish them somewhere ? ?

But time of the meet went again to Doug Watson with a different horse - think he still holds his course record too:

Interesting race that one as while the winner still holds a track record & like the 2nd has won again since - it was the 2nd who took a full second off the 6f course record on Thursday last & the 3rd was 3rd again in another track record (same day) both of which were run over different distances.

But nout of a mention from the Racing Post about any course records even while they have standard times for the track & the fact that there were two course records from 3 races suggests the going description of 'good' is a bit way off too!

Totally strange run that one - complete opposite to last time where he was slow from the stalls in a sprint this time comes out like a rocket & fades after 6f - certainly shown he has a race in him but ??

Anyway, going back to Barbecue Eddie, I wasn't the only one who noticed a Godolphin acquisition on only his 4th career start in 2nd:

    http://www.nickmordin.com/dubai.htm

This was only another Group 3 class performance by Barbecue Eddie. I concede that he excels on Meydan's Tapeta surface. He's won six of the last eight times he's run seven furlongs or a mile on it. I also concede that the Godolphin Mile is often a weak race despite its huge prize money, so it's a very good target for the nine year old. But I'd be disappointed if there wasn't something good enough to beat him in this year's contest.

Runner up OUT OF BOUNDS (37/112p) may yet prove good enough to do the trick. He's a great big mountain of muscle that probably needed what was his first run in a year (he was off due to fracturing his left front ankle). He certainly looked very promising in America before that.

Out Of Bounds is very deep chested, so I can see you could argue he might improve over longer and become a Dubai World Cup candidate. But he's surely too darned big to be anything but a sprinter or a miler. If he steps up to nine furlongs for the second leg of the Al Maktoum Challenge I'd be inclined to say he won't last home.

While we been having all this poor weather I added Jebel Ali to the spreadsheet & it wouldn't surprise me - especially if the official handicapper rates this up as the imbecile from the Racing Post has done - if one of the first two here was to turn up in a handicap at Meydan pretty soon, 2 years his junior but ran to within 5lb's of the 5/5 course & Gr3 winner Treble Jig yesterday.

Having said that tho - they may need a prep run as 2/3 of winners in 2012 like 2011 at Meydan last ran at Meydan itself:

    Mr Mordin agrees:

    POSTED ON JANUARY 21, 2013

    SOFT FALLING RAIN IMPRESSES
    http://www.nickmordin.com/dubai.htm
South African trainer Mike has a tremendous record at the Dubai Carnival and always seems able to produce at least one top class three year old for the meeting. This time around that is clearly the unbeaten SOFT FALLING RAIN (37) who fairly hosed up in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial over seven furlongs on Meydan's Tapeta track.

Allowed a pretty soft lead, Soft Falling Rain cruised away up the straight to win unchallenged while clocking a time that's Group class for a three year old this early in the year. And it certainly looked like he could have run a length or two quicker if asked.

Soft Falling Rain is a muscular, mature, good bodied sort that's built for speed. I'd say the mile of the UAE Guineas will prove a maximum for him.

oh well we had the 2000 guineas winner at shoddy odds

but 'mental' yes, would be a good way to describe this year's joust carnival or whatever...

Actually had a top rated winner yesterday 9/1 Moonwalk In Paris but I had it down as an unproven dubious figure & he was a 2nd string

Beginning to think we better off just following stables in form but keeping up with the Godolphin operation a bit tricky dicky while they just import horses from all over the world ? ?

Anyway, think we'll be hearing a bit more about Mental
