Councillor blames floods on gay marriage

So UKIP Councilor David Silvester has written to David Cameron to say that the legalisation of gay marriage is the cause of the recent bad weather and subsequent flooding.

I find it hard to believe that people who hold this type of view are prepared to speak on it so openly without fear of being labelled an idiot.

You want to believe that as a society the world is moving on, but with Uganda making homosexuality illegal, Russia criminalising aspects of it and equating being gay to paeophilia and the surprisingly high numbers in oppositioin to legalising gay marriage in this country, you realise what a backward thinking world we still live in.

    IDIOT!!

    It's the sun, stupid?

Or at least, that's what they're saying at the beeb:

    Interesting little video:

Has the Sun gone to sleep?

17 January 2014 Last updated at 05:57 GMT

Scientists are saying that the Sun is in a phase of "solar lull" - meaning that it has fallen asleep - and it is baffling them.

History suggests that periods of unusual "solar lull" coincide with bitterly cold winters.

Rebecca Morelle reports for BBC Newsnight on the effect this inactivity could have on our current climate, and what the implications might be for global warming. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-en...771510?SThisFB

    IDIOT IDIOT COMPLETE & UTTER:

I thought UKIP was against the EU? Something here I totally agree with:

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/late...ong-hot-summer

"Bands of heavy rain will lash the country from Tuesday, swept in from the east by strong coastal winds.

The bad weather will continue into Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures plummeting towards the end of the week.

Frost and ice descends on Friday, before more rain into the weekend with the north and west battered by gales.

It comes as communities still recover from last week’s floods.

Ladbrokes slashed odds to 6-4 on this being the wettest ever January.

It is also odds on at 4-5 that 2014 will be the wettest year to date.

Spokeswoman Jessica Bridge said: “The odds are falling as quick as the rain and it looks like January’s downpours will enter the record books.”

Meanwhile, some experts are blaming flooding on the EU, saying its cash subsidies encourage farmers to fell trees, which leaves nothing to soak up heavy rain.

The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy only coughs up its biggest payment if land is free from what it calls “unwanted vegetation”, but critics say removing trees means land is saturated quicker.

But it is not all doom and gloom as scorching summers will hit us in the next 10 years due to Atlantic climate changes, say experts.

Dr Jon Robson, from the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, said: “In Britain, we could see a return to drier summers, although it could mean more droughts in parts of Europe and Africa.”"

The problem with more trees is that they actually cause more rain due to the massive amounts of moisture they release. Hence the heavy rains they get in places like the Amazon. Reduce the number of trees, and the rainfall also reduces, which it has in that area.

The sun has little effect on the climate overall, at over 90 million miles away, its influence is not that great. The problem with the statement "History suggests that periods of unusual "solar lull" coincide with bitterly cold winters." is that we do not have enough records to prove it one way or another.

Cattle account for a big chunk of the released methane, so we can help save the planet by eating at KFC every day.

The next ice age is long overdue. We were heading towards one until the industrial age started, then we screwed up the climate. It would take a few thousand years for the atmosphere to get back to what it was, but that will only happen if humanity vanished today. So another ice age is thousands of years away. Humans have reversed the general trend of the planets climate.

My MP has secured a debate [today] & will be blaming a lack of dredging:

"Somerset Conservative MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has secured an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday next week, at which the cost to the local commumity of the floods will be debated.

He said he intends to use the debate to highlight what he calls the ‘catastrophic’ failings of the Environment Agency.

Mr Liddell-Grainger has already asked UK ministers to apply for European Union funding to tackle the flooding, which has brought misery to a number of villages and left 11 per cent of Somerset’s Sedgemoor district – some 16,000 acres of top quality farmland – under water.

Critics blame the failure to maintain the dredging of the rivers Parrett and Tone for the fact that the flood waters have still not abated. The EA said this week: “Dredging and clearing channels are important parts of the Environment Agency’s maintenance regime, and we spend £20million a year on dredging. However it is often not the best long term or economic solution compared with other flood risk measures.”

The RSPB, which maintains large areas of the Levels for the benefit of wading birds, does not accept river dredging is the answer.
