Okay, for all you Trivia and Quiz fiends, simply follow this link to a new daily quiz.

http://www.funtrivia.com/private/main.cfm?tid=18440

All you have to do is click on the Create a New Trivia Account link, enter an email address, a user name (the one you use in Win 2 Win is ideal) and a password. Click Ok and then start playing. :D

You can only play once per day and you will get ten completely random questions based on British trivia. It could be sports, politics, history, TV, music - in fact, almost anything. After you've submitted your answers your score is automatically calculated for you.

All the daily scores are then added together to reveal the Brain of Win 2 Win for the month with the top 5 scorers being recorded for posterity in the Hall of Fame :yikes: As if that's not all, I will also be awarding a £10 Amazon voucher to the overall monthly winner for April.

So don't delay - play today!!

Glos,
You sly fox you...
I thought I'd have another go...
and improve my score...
But it won't bloody well let me, will it, 'til tomorrow.

Top Marks & Regards

Ah yes...very cunning :wink

Even worse, it throws up random questions for me too and I got one about horse-racing wrong!!!

i have to admit, the vast majority of my answers were a compleat guess.
i must remember though - dont watch TV mid quiz. didn't know it was timed :(

Well done to BigC - yesterdays daily winner and currently leading the monthly challenge :pn

Who's going to knock him off the top spot today?

GlosRFC
3rd April 2005, 18:21
We have a new daily leader but will he still be there with less than 11 hours to go?

The more players, the higher the points. And points make prizes - in this case a tenner for the overall highest score this month :D

So don't delay - register today!

I had a go, but they were really REALLY hard..... and that's my excuse :dunce

:D :laugh

GlosRFC
3rd April 2005, 18:31
Sorry but I don't set the questions. If I did, I'd get most of them right! I thought I'd set it up for easy-peasy questions though so I'm afraid that excuse doesn't hold water :D

What I might do in future is to have themed months - Music for May, Sport for June, History for July, perhaps? Or themed weeks/days? Anyone got any views?

We also need to persuade some of the real brainiacs to take part - Merlin, Mathare, E55exboi, Fadetoblack, Win2Win etc :wiggle:

mathare
3rd April 2005, 18:35
Have some of that!! :D

It's Corporal General Knowledge next month :D

Better go and give it a go myself now. I should point out that I'm automatically disqualified from winning the monthly prize.

Darn - one wrong. Who is Marco Pirroni anyway???

Fadetoblack
3rd April 2005, 19:04
Wow...a couple of them were on the royal family and that wouldn't be one of my strongest areas. Excellent idea though glos, fair play!

Questions correct: 4 / 10 :(

GlosRFC
3rd April 2005, 19:14
Never mind Kevin. Over the course of the month everyone gets asked the same questions so it'll balance out. Tomorrow you'll get 10/10 and Piggy will get 4/10 :D

TheOldhamWhisper
3rd April 2005, 19:50
I assume that not everyone gets the same questions then - Scottish poetry and Welsh history were never my strong points. And they were the 'easy peasy' questions?????

bigcumba
3rd April 2005, 20:21
Jeez, I just got a tough set of questions....got 6 correct, but a couple of those were guesses!

GlosRFC
3rd April 2005, 20:50
That's right Oldham, the questions are allocated on a random basis so everyone should see different ones each day. But over a month they will even out - one day you might get a host of questions you don't know, the next day you might be able to answer them all within a few seconds.

I accept that some of the question subjects might be a little tough at the moment as I've essentially requested every topic that references the UK or British Isles. I'll have a tweak tonight and see if I can narrow down some of those choices to make it a tad easier in the coming days.

The alternative is to just select what they call the Easy/Intermediate category but that will include a lot of "easy" American topics that won't be so easy for us. Hope that helps.

bigcumba
3rd April 2005, 20:54
I'm happy with the toughness as it is... don't want to make it too easy, and as you said it should all even out over the month... for instance today I got 2 questions on obscure 60's music - I know a reasonable bit about that but these stumped me, plus a couple of tough history ones I had to guess. Keep it as it is for now :)

GlosRFC
3rd April 2005, 21:00
Cheers BigC. I might have a look anyway but I think you're probably right. After all, I figure that if Vegy can get 45% of them right, then it must be pitched at the right kind of level :D

If it's any consolation, I've had to guess at most of them too.

GlosRFC
4th April 2005, 07:44
Well done to Piggy...10 correct answers and a winning daily score of 23 points means he leaps into joint first place along with BigC. They are both closely followed by presto with mathare hot on the heels of this leading bunch.

http://www.funtrivia.com/private/cumulative.cfm?tid=18440

GlosRFC
4th April 2005, 07:49
Cheating? In a respectable racing forum - surely not.

But give it a go and let's see how much of a whizz you are :D

For those not in the know, you're more than welcome to Google for the answers but be aware that the longer you take to complete the quiz, the lower your daily score is likely to be

I googled for one of them on today's quiz but it got me nowhere, so never again. It's a good game but I don't particularly like the format of the quiz the way all the questions re appear and the fact that they're all based on britain to be honest. Also some of them are incorrect...for example, Iceland has the oldest democratic government in the world, not the isle of man....

Anyway, that's my moan over

Win2Win
4th April 2005, 11:21
If you know how to use Google to get the best out of it, finding answers is a quick process. I was watching an old version of Mastermind the other week, and was coming up with the answers nearly as quick the person :)

GlosRFC
4th April 2005, 12:44
It depends which source you're prepared to believe but both the Icelandic parliament and the Tynwald were established in the 8th Century. I'm not sure how your question was worded but the Icelandic government was suspended during the 18th Century so the oldest continuous parliament would seem to belong to the Isle of Man. You do have the facility to challenge disputed answers on the screen immediately after you've submitted yours.

You shouldn't get the same set of questions each round although it's not impossible that some of them will be repeated because, as you've pointed out, I've asked for questions on British topics so the subset will naturally be smaller than if I'd asked for random questions from the entire database. The rationale is that most people likely to enter are British and will, hopefully, know something about their own country.

In future months I'll widen the choice out and go for more general themes such as music or film and there's nothing to prohibit the use of search engines if you so wish.

Hope that helps.

Fadetoblack

We have a new leader as Presto's consistency sees him leapfrog clear; closely followed by Mathare. These two are starting to set the pace as there's a gap developing between them and Chancer who's fine win yesterday propels him into joint third place with early leader BigC and Sunday's wunderkind, Piggy.

5th April 2005, 12:41
Phil,

Points are awarded based on your final position on each daily quiz. Even though you failed to get any questions right, you were sufficiently high enough up the leaderboard yesterday to be awarded a few consolation points.

Of course, that might be a different Phil entirely, in which case you can easily register with a different name if you want to take part.

Congratulations to Yoda for winning yesterdays quiz. On the cumulative results we see that Mathare has leapt into the lead although it's certainly not an unassailable one at this stage. Presto and Chancer are now fighting it out in the remaining medal positions while there appears to be a strong surge coming from Sparky. At the foot of the table, Silax and "Phil" appear to be performing equally as well for some strange reason.

Congratulations to Sparky - yesterday's victorious winner. This has helped propel him into the overall lead too although it's very close with Presto and Mathare snapping at his heels.
There then follows a chasing group of 5 led by Fadetoblack (despite various handicaps) that also includes previous daily winners Chancer and Yoda and the relative novice, Vegy.

Well done to Mathare, yesterdays winner who now also streaks into the lead in the overall race. In second place is Fadetoblack as Sparky's challenge appears to have faded.

Still too early to call though and it could well be that some of the doughty stayers from the chasing group are beginning to make their move, after creditable performances yesterday from alianzalima, Ada and Oldham Whisper.

GlosRFC
9th April 2005, 12:27
Hmmmm, looks like the hosting site has thrown a wobbly and hasn't transferred yesterday's scores over to the cumulative totals. The site was a little slow yesterday so maybe it will sort itself out once it clocks over another 24 hours. Good thinking we've got the Grand National to occupy ourselves with instead, isn't it :D

I think I've mentioned the questions before but I'll do so again. I don't set them - they're selected at random from a database of 700,000 from 8,000 different categories. Most of those categories are either very obscure (e.g. Andy Griffiths TV show) or the questions are very American (what is the state flower of New Mexico). What I've tried to do is tailor the quiz to select only questions that might be relative to a British audience which includes UK Sport, UK Geography, UK TV and UK Music. I originally included UK History and UK Politics but some people found them too hard so I took them out.

Assuming the site is working properly again tomorrow, what I will do is to change some of the categories from next week to include more general topics such as Movies, Music, Science & Technology etc., but be warned that you might have to do a bit more googling with the Yankee-orientated questions. :yikes:

Personally I think everyone's done really well in the first week.

Talk about variety - 3 Star Wars questions, 2 on the FA Cup, another football one, one on British leaders, an obscure movie quote, 60s music and Scottish rugby. No wonder I did so badly

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Now this is taking the biscuit!!!......to top it all, I got it right!!...:laugh :laugh :laugh

A few marble chips are taken in a test-tube, to which a few ml of hydrochloric acid is added. The two react, resulting in the formation of an acid and a salt. The acid then undergoes decomposition to form two new compounds. Which three compounds are the final products of these reactions?

As I mentioned above, I altered the question categories this morning by by dropping some of the more obscure sports questions and replacing them with random questions on science, inventors, star wars, star trek, and movie trivia. That doesn't mean you still won't see the odd rugby or gaelic dancing question - it just means you won't see them so often :)

We'll give this a try for a few days and then I'll switch the categories around again. As always, the questions you get are entirely random and it does even itself out over time as daily winners can attest to as they're normally at the bottom of the heap the day after they've won :D

Well done to Sparky for winning yesterday and a deserved pat on the back to Vegy on his amazing second place!

Feel free to suggest away. Just realised you meant a new thread in here - I thought you meant new topics for questions :D But congestion's good, just ask Ken Livingstone - I might slap a charge on all who visit this one. Good point though so I'll kick off a new one tomorrow.

And, on reflection, FTB might be right - it asked me to name the two whales in Star Trek 4!!! As if that wasn't bad enough I also got a Scottish folk music question and who played half back for Scotland in 1903 :yikes:

Needless to say, my performance was particularly dire today.

Not to worry. From tomorrow the subject is Film. So expect no more dodgy football and rugby questions.

Instead you're likely to be asked about movie taglines, horror films, westerns, comedies, kids films, gangster movies, Oscar winners, and name the year. Can't promise you won't get Star Trek questions though as Sc-Fi films are still included.

Just a reminder

1. You don't get points for how quickly you can guess. Remember that each correct answer gives you 100 points (or just over 1 1/2 minutes extra time to answer the next question) so it pays to take your time.

2. Yes, it's possible to select a different category each day but then the questions will still be generated randomly. So you might end up with really tough questions on that one day while someone else will get all the easy ones. Instead, I think it's fairer to select a general theme from which to pluck the questions. Plus it means I don't have to be around to change it on a daily basis.

3. It's all meant to be a bit of fun (even if Sparky seems to be taking it seriously). If it was too easy it wouldn't be challenging :D

4. The next category will be music so that is likely to even things up a bit. That will be followed by general trivia for a few days.

In the meantime, congratulations to Sparky for winning yesterday. Still under halfway and he's beginning to establish a lead. But he's not out of sight just yet as both Mathare and Presto are doggedly pursuing him. Meanwhile the winless Vegy has leapt into 4th place.

Glos you're doing a great job with this quiz and it was a super idea, but let's face it, if we're gonna build you up and place you on a pedestal then we have to knock you off it just as fast. You just make it that bit easier to do that with questions about the drummer in Devil's Genitalia, or the piece of R2-D2 that by passes the main circuit board just above his hard drive...

bigcumba

. Randy Rhoads? Sunds like a wrestler to me.

Randy was the guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne's original solo band after he got sacked from Black Sabbath. Sadly the guy was killed in an accident when he was only around 23 when a light aircraft crashed into his trailer while he was sleeping in it.... a very talented bloke and a sad loss to the rock world when it happened

Just shows that what some of us think is obscure others will know right away!
