View Full Version : How Many Miles.......?

Here's a teaser I used as last Christmas's quiz tie-break question....

.....so I would be grateful if BigC & Mathare would be kind enough to spectate rather than contribute on this one.....please.

The attachments are real photos of motorway mileage signs in the UK with 5 distances (in miles) removed for Chester, Manchester, Oxford, Preston & Stafford.

What you have to do is to work out what the missing mileages are from the other information shown, ADD THEM UP, and post your answer as the TOTAL of the 5 mileages, Please DO NOT post any individual mileages.

"Get a life"...I hear you say.

Good Luck

Ada.

i'll go for 270 miles

Bigmazey,

OK, I'll take your answer of 270 miles for now.

Let's see if other forumites post their own guesstimations & then maybe you'll decide your answer is too high/low & want to submit another guess (or not).

This would be a wild stab in the dark....although the M6 sign is actually wrong (M-way signs should have the nearest place at the top of the sign and the furthest place at the bottom)

Total = 159 miles

Bigmazey,

Full marks for checking my Christmas Quiz Thread last year, but I'm afraid you won't find the answer there. :D

Glos,

Wrong it may be, but you'll have to take that up with the local authorities. :D

I can assure you that you will find that sign really exists, NONE of the photos have been doctored in any way apart from having the named mileages removed for the purposes of this quiz.

Again, I will log your answer of 159 miles, as I have Bigmazey's 270 miles.

Let's hope a few more people have a stab at this, & who knows... I may even stump up a prize at the end of it all.

I don't doubt that it exists...just that conventional wisdom recognises that people normally read from top to bottom. So M-way signs indicate the closest place first because it makes it easier for the driver - they don't have to slow down to concentrate on the sign, and it therefore reduces the likelihood of accidents.

These are the distances I guessed at:
Chester @ 9 miles
Manchester @ 46 miles
Oxford @ 38 miles
Preston @ 53 miles
Stafford @ 13 miles

Stafford was the one that let me down :(
