Looking good Pual. That's an excellent SR. Is this a system, or are you picking these from form?

bigcumba
4th April 2007, 21:34
Yep, good to see you doing well with this Paul.... and a good lesson in patience for folk as well - you lost a chunk of your bank at the start but stuck with it and you're well in profit now - as did Wayne with his 'vs the handicapper' thread - of he'd given up after losing about 40% of his bank at the start he wouldn't be sitting with it at £10,000+ now!

Interesting.

I always considered if it was morally wrong to bet, but don't believe it is. I've often seen priests at the races, betting away here in Ireland.

The bookies shut on Sundays here up until a few years ago.

does anyone have an opion on this :

i have an 80.28% strike rate of horses finishing in the frame.
would i be better off doing win & place ( 1pt win , 2pts place ) or stick to win only ?

any advice appreciated :doh

wb
1st May 2007, 12:46
By all means try it out. From my experience, the win market is best and I've struggled to profit from the place market. The problem with the place market is that there is not much liquidity early on which makes it hard to paper trade a system there. If I were you I'd set up a seperate fun or paper bank rather that messing with something that is not broken.

since being forced to give up my job so i could bring up my boys due to the passing of wife money has been extremely tight.
anyway ive managed to scrimp & save £100 and opened a betfair account.
the bets i put on this thread have around a 40% strike rate so what % would you lot recomend i use to bet with to build up my bank with the hope of a bit of extra money come christmas.instead of having the usual "loan"off the social.
any suggestions welcome :thumbs

You don't have to back them Paul. It's a mythical £1000.
Betfair's minimum bet is £2, so there's your answer for starting off.

The old saying is 'only bet what you can afford to lose' which isn't really your situation by the sounds of it Paul. I'd agree with Sparky, if it was as difficult as you say to get the £100 together dont take too much risk. A bad run can always wipe you out and you don't want to lose that ton.

Lets face it if you only bet the £2 and you still come out £25 or even £50 ahead its a cracking result

Hope it works out, good luck :)

wb
4th May 2007, 11:45
Sorry to hear of your troubles Paul and huge respect is due for the dedication you have for your family. I suppose I must echo what the lads have said: only gamble what you can afford to lose, and if the thought of losing that £100 would be a mini disaster for you, then withdraw it. While this is going very well to date, all gambling must be done with the worst case scenario in mind. And in horse racing, worst case scenarios come thick and fast!

However, if you do go ahead with it, I'd recommend 3% of the bank as the stakes as your SR is decent at 40%. If you want to take a more cautious approach, use 2%. As sparky said - this would be £2 starting off (the minimum stake on betfair) so should it go into the red, you will have to 'get around' the minimum stake thing.

Thanks for the winners yesterday by the way :wink :)

Really sorry to hear about your problems Paul. The only thing I'd like to add to what everyone else has said is that betting banks don't have to be big - I've been in a similar financial situation when my husband was ill, and at one point had a total bank of £5 which was all I could afford to lose at the time. Instead of bets being in pounds they were in pence - you can bet as low as 10p with the bookies - but it was still just as much fun trying to increase the bank and with the strike rate you've got I should think you'd still make a profit even without Betfair's better odds. If I was you I'd deposit £5 with one of the bookies and play with that - not too much damage if you lose it, but it gives you an interest and it's all good practice for when you can afford a bigger bank.

Hope things get better for you soon ! :)

paul183195
6th May 2007, 09:33

Hey paul ,
sorry about your situation why not use betdaq i get as gooder odds there as betfair although mostly have to use betfair for the liquidity but you should be just fine on there and you can bet as litle as 50 pence surely you will soon get in to stride with your strike rate a 50 point rolling bank of £25 could soon get going all the best with these and for the future SC :thumbs

Don't get too worried about it Paul, my handicap thread recently had around 30 losers in a row. As annoying as it is, it happens all of us from time to time. Most of your horses are thereabouts anyway, so I don't think there is too much to be worried about just yet.

Paul,
Might I suggest for a staking plan of 5% multiplied by the strike rate (in this case 42.93%)?

paul183195
20th June 2007, 08:13
is that 49.67 ?

Sorry Paul, I don't understand the question.

wb
20th June 2007, 13:20
What I do is base my stakes on my SR. So if I have a 20% SR, I use 2% stake. If I have a 25 % SR, I use 2.5% of the bank and so on. I'd rarely go beyond 4% though.

Shouldn't a staking plan also have something to do with the chance each horse has of winning?

A 3/1 chance should have half the stake of an even money shot. Because in theory it has half the chance of winning.

:splapme We don't know what a horses true chances are. We can only guess. :headbange

:laugh:headbange:headbange Of course we do not know the true value WB thats why I said "in theory" But instead of guessing read the form book and make an informed opinion. Just like the Bookies odds compilers do.

If it can not be done then bookies would price up a race with all the horses the same price.

Are you really saying Wb that the stake should be the same on an 11/10 shot as it is for one at 20/1?

Ginge

Vic
22nd June 2007, 11:46
That depends on how you bet Ginge - if you bet to win the same amount on each horse then of course you change your stake, but many folks on here follow a rising stake based on profitabilty plan - and yes, if their stake on a given day is £5, then it's £5 no matter waht the odds are - in fact all you need worry about is getting the best odds you can.

Of course the 11/10 will have a greater chance of winning than a 20/1 shot, in theory 47.6% vs 4.76% - but is the difference really that great, and say you can get 40/1 on the exchanges about the 20/1 shot.

There is no "right" way of doing it, just different ways of doing it - the true right way to do it is to be consistent in the approach and to get the best price you can:)

buddhabee
23rd June 2007, 11:46
Horses have no concept of money. They have no concept of price. They have no concept of favourite. All they know is that they have someone on their back and a load of other horses around them and they are being made to run. It's other 'horse' factors that affect how they perform.

Their 'price' is a human concept and is a reference to the amount of money being put on that horse in the hope that it will win. And there are many 'human' factors that affect that.
