I've been doing some research today using the racecards from 29/3 to 3/4 inclusive. I have been looking at how the favourites fared.

Including Ireland there were 134 races, I've used the SportingLife results page and the SPs posted there.

There were 41 winners (30.6%). If you placed £10 on each horse you'd be down £318.18. (Actually, that £10 divided by the number of co-faves, halved for e/w if sp better than 5/1).

31 races had odds-on favs, 20 of these won (64.5%). If you placed £10 on each horse then you'd be up £22.

I also looked at laying all favs using a £2 lay. You'd be down £32.68.

Laying odds-on only you'd be down £44.40.

Laying favs not odds-on youd be up £11.72.

This last criteria is the one I tend to use, adding £2 if a horse wins, last week the max number of winners was 3, so the max lay was £6, you'd be up £22.96. A bank of £110 would have been needed to cover present liabilities and liabilities of bets not yet settled.

I am not recommending any system here, but I hope these stats are of some use.
