View Full Version : Can you pick 10 correct?

monty

Ok guys… I’ve been thinking about a winning bet from last weekend. Some of you might have read about it. The bet I’m talking about was posted on another forum, when guy called Trogdor successfully picked all 10 selections correct and he won over $23,000. :REDanceda
I’ve managed to pick 9 out of 10 correct twice before, but I’ve never managed to hit all ten...:ermmm
This will be a fun bet, so I’ll only be putting on my minimum stake on my 10 just incase I managed to get them all. :REGamblMo
What I would like you all to do? is pick your best 10 teams from the weekend’s fixtures. Your selections can be from any football league you want?
Now remember, you don’t have even place a bet on your teams, as I just want to see what the average amount of results that people will get right from their 10 selections.

So I would be grateful if you all posted up your 10 picks. I think you will all be surprised how low it will turn out. I’ll have a guess and say most people will get around 5 correct from 10

Don’t be chicken have go…:D

Monty’s 10

Dundee Utd v’s Falkirk… (Saturday)

Y'know the biggest problem with bets like this (in my opinion) - people always underestimate the potential for a draw.

You've both gone for 10 winners and I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say that of those 20 games there will be 3 draws in there

Your 100% right mate,

The reason I picked 10 home wins is I've always read that over a season home wins will account for around 50% of the games played, and the other 50% is shared between Aways and Draws, so going by thise figures there could be up to 5 matches drawn from the 20 matches picked already.

Mathare....I'll look forward to seeing your 10....:D

I don't think it is generally underestimating the draw potential.

Normally people choose games in an acca where they think a team will dominate and the margin will be 2 goals plus.

A draw inclines you think the match will be close and your preferred result is not guaranteed until the whole of the 90+ minutes are up. Whereas the thinking behind mine is most of the games wil be over by HT and I can sit back and relax! :laugh

You're right Mat, that's why an acca is so hard to get up. Look at Man utd v Sunderland last time they were up. Who'd have picked 0-0 for that?

You're right Mat, that's why an acca is so hard to get up. Look at Man utd v Sunderland last time they were up. Who'd have picked 0-0 for that?Exactly.

This is what I meant maybe more than underestimating the draw potential. The more bets in the acca the greater the likelihood that one of the games won't go the way you expect. And as most people put perceived bankers in accas of this size it's more likely to be a draw that brings the bet crashing down rather than a win for the other team.

Trebles used to be my limit on the football. Now I stick to singles, and only rarely do those.

But out of interest, do we have to use win/draw/win markets here or can I get adventurous?

Cheers Mate!

I must admit I was also a bit shocked at the amount Trogdor put on 10 teams, but I believe him, he got 10 results up once before but it was for a lesser stake. Some people just like to bet that way, I remember a couple of years back Ze Pelle also hit a big win, he does correct score combos, and I'm sure you must have seen his selections on G.G they look like some sort of secret binary coded message....:laugh

I've often wondered about doing a kind of accumulator but step by step where you try to start with one that is pretty much a cert (as much as they can be anyway!) and then you bank half the profit and put your original stake plus the other half of the profit on the next pick, and so on.

Yeah, why not :) Ok, to keep it more interesting I'll try and get one or more a day to keep it going quickly. I think I might try to not go too odds on with the first selection to get things moving as well.

So as it's a mythical bank we'll start with a £100 stake. If it wins, half the profit (I'll remove 5% as a standard commission as I'll use betfair prices) and the original stake will go onto the next selection. If it loses then it'll be a short accumulator :laugh

Going to go with one that could be a tight one as Fiorentina are a decent side.

AC Milan to beat Fiorentina @ 1.59

If this wins then 100+ profit (56.05) will go onto Drogheda to beat UCD later @ 1.49 (will use that price as I won't be about at that time to check price then) Of course if Milan don't win it's irrelevant :laugh

Skittle
3rd September 2007, 17:29
Last two posts are nearly spot on. The idea of an 'ongoing' accumulator is a very simple and effective way of making larger profit. As was said, you can take out profit along the way thus reducing the pressure. The 'pressure' angle is one that a lot of the 'mug' punters tend to ignore, but I believe it is one of the vital ingredients to making a profit. It's this 'pressure' angle that MattR is already creating for himself by doing bets immediately, two in fact. It's fine if you sincerely believe that they are 'good things', but I'm not convinced this is the case here. You don't have to 'move things along quickly'. Who says that you do ? You are in total control, so you should be the one who decides when and where. If you set parameters, you then feel obliged to stick to them.................so don't. In doing so, you create needless pressure. It's so easy for anyone to 'spout' about how to do things, and we've all done and said something similar during our betting 'careers', but the bottom line here is DISCIPLINE.

Falling down early is not the end of the world. As long as you know the bet was 'the right one', get back on the horse and start again.

I will have a go at this myself and see if I can put into practice that which I preach.

I agree Skittle..:happyboun

That's why you will find my Monty Bets could be anything from 3 days to 10 apart, you've got to be confident that your picking the right selections before placing a bet, mind you they don't always win, but it's they way I like to do things...:D

monty
3rd September 2007, 19:59
My main bet on Drogs tonight and I've placed a small fun bet on Stephen Hughes @ 6/1 to score anytime for Motherwell, he signed for them on the last day before the transfer deadline.

MattR

It's this 'pressure' angle that MattR is already creating for himself by doing bets immediately, two in fact. It's fine if you sincerely believe that they are 'good things', but I'm not convinced this is the case here. You don't have to 'move things along quickly'. Who says that you do ?

Totally agree Skittle, the only reason I did that was just for the sake of making the thread move along quicker as I wasn't doing it with real money. But on reflection it isn't worth doing that way for two reasons. One, as you say, picking them for the sake of it rather than because you actually think they are the right pick, and two if it's not done with real money (even £2 start) you won't get an accurate test as you'll tend to go with the pick if it's mythical even if you are not 100% sure you would with real money on it.

As it turns out AC Milan did draw so I'll start again when the right game comes along and I'll start with a £2 bet and proceed from there.

What's wrong with cricket? Even Scotland has a team. It was only while the 20/20 stuff was on. I was finding it very profitable, same with the WC Rugby at the moment on the handicaps.
