View Full Version : Course Record Breakers

Seems these days the Racing Post Analysis can't be bothered to tell us when a horse breaks a course record, speed figures don't tell us everything and the latest was Zaynar(Fr), last week @ Ascot

[The Racing Post website results section did though with the latest:

On the AW, most recently, 4 of note:

Capucci - yet to run since breaking 7f record @ Wolverhampton in early Oct 09 - 2nd & 3rd both won since.

Gitano Hernando - 8.5f Wolverhampton Sept 09, followed up in a Grade one at Santa Anita & then never turned up at the Breeders' Cup meeting, hopefully going to Dubai Carnival & 10f expected to suit.

Jaconet - recent 6f Lingfield record breaker & scored again CD last week.

Seek The Fair Land - shaved 1/3rd of a second off a 3 year record over 7f @ Kempton Dec 09

I might do something like below for the AW but for now, the Racing Post have just added Wetherby Standard Times to their site after the course has been relaid of late, rather like Ascot & Kempton. I'm not altogether sure but as these records are quite recent they are likely to get beat by any decent prospect quite often - I'll try & keep this updated & make a note of when any of these are set to run again.

Au Courant(Ire) - frsh

H'mm is set to run here after breaking Kempton 20f Crse Rec last time he ran - have seen he is favourite on at least one betting forecast but I'm not happy with that - the only experience of Left handed tracks is winning a 5 runner NHF race at Worcester on his career debut & being blinkered first time & jumped poorly & Pulled Up behind Chapoturgeon(Fr) in last season's Jewson Novice H'cap @ Chelt.

Trainer may well be bang in form & won the corresponding race last year but at least with Classic Fiddle there was some previous Left handed track form - I'd oppose Au Courant today with one that has -

J J O'Neil has a fine - 2 wins 1 place from 6 runners - record in this race and his runner, Isn't That Lucky, stayed on strongly to snatch second in the above race at Cheltenham - EW me thinks!

Another fine balls up - Scots Dragoon 26.5f 'gd Newb ran yesterday too, I only noticed too late (ruddy work) but thought, better Right handed, prefers shorter trip & better ground & thought he had less chance than Au Courant so ran quite well considering to be 2nd & 24l's back to the third, he'll be winning again before long!

Yep, definitely doing a list for the AW, this little lot of the most recent course record breakers on the AW have produced a decent priced winner in each of the last three weeks.

Horses emboldened are the latest track record breakers, red signifies recent win since:

Find it slightly interesting that Friday's winner Falcativ is with the same trainer as recent Wolverhampton record breaker, Gitano Hernando, Marcu Botti

After the Peterborough Chase that's 6 wins since taking Kempton's 2m hurdle crse rec in Nov 07 for Deep Purple - Well Chief still holds a similar record (2m hurdle) from 2003!

Course records are pretty meaningless to me as they change the size of the racetrack without telling anyone, and as far as I'm concerned all hand timed records should be seperate from the electronic ones.

Got a runner today 1.10 Southwell

The 5f Crse Rec holder Godfrey Street turns out in what looks a hot ? little race for the course - his record since breaking the track record in Jan 08 stands at W 3 / Pl 3 / Rn 16 - the wins were at 11/4, 16/1 & 11/1 so he has been profitable to follow & though he is on a bit of a losing run he is now on a career low mark, ran into a place last time & has won the last two January's & feel his time is near again. Interesting jockey booking too, though he's never ridden him before, A Hefferman has been placed 5 from 10 of his latest mounts at the track - I have seen 14/s fc so far & that could be worth an EW shout.

18th December 2009, 12:00
Scots Dragoon 26.5f 'gd Newb but thought, better Right handed, prefers shorter trip & better ground & thought he had less chance than Au Courant so ran quite well considering to be 2nd & 24l's back to the third, he'll be winning again before long!

Nothing is ever simple is it? I'd love to be shouting win win in the 3.40 @ Ascot but there is something statistically wrong here; the vast majority of Henderson's recent winners had 26 or more days to their last run - the less than 1 in 7 or 5 out of 38 that did manage a win when running <26 days were all clear favourite in fields with less than 12 runners.

I can't be any more optimistic than say EW or just place I'm afraid.

Kempton's 12f Crse Record Holder, Falcativ goes again today in the 4.15 & while he's 3/3 100% on the AW may as well stick with him, best priced 10/3 with Skybet & VC

Actually got a winner yesterday & hopefully, while there is less racing & I get more organised (missed a 6/1 from 10/s winner in Young Dottie a couple of Monday's ago) there should be less chance of me missing them but

Our most recent record breaker Seek The Fair Land runs again over CD Kempton 3.05 Be lucky to get anything above evens but looks pretty much unopposable to me!

Course records are pretty meaningless to me as they change the size of the racetrack without telling anyone.

Well I never! Nick Mordin is in agreement with you, at least over the jumps - he says in this week's Weekender:

"I finally understood that it is basically impossible to make accurate speed ratings for jump races. - - Over the jumps however, the official distances of races are allowed to differ by as much as 50 yards per circuit from what's advertised. And that's in Britain - in Ireland they have so little respect for race distances nobody even bothers to keep course records."

Theoretically then, our little list of AW course record breakers should produce more winners?

Does that mean Kauto Star has no chance of winning a race where he broke the Course Record last year? Or will the 2m Course Record holder, Deep Purple prove too speedy & topple the great? Got a few more runners entered up over the weekend, will Kauto be the only winner? I'll be back......

4 Runners today:

2.55 Winc - Scots Dragoon Safe for a place me thinks.

3.05 Kemp - Kauto Star (a fourth win would be a befitting end to a pretty historic year) & Deep Purple (has won 6 times since his 2m hurdle course record win here but this is his toughest assignment yet, has EW claims!)

3.40 Kemp - Dover's Hill Got a feeling this is a 'spring' horse but could still be worth doing EW

Godspot
29th December 2009, 13:19
Bit unlucky with Dover's Hill coming down at the last while still in with a serious chance.

2.40 Newbury

Two runners in Lough Derg & Fair Along but if I was forced to have a bet in this race it would have to be Diamond Harry

Had a couple of runners (3 in fact) since last post but nothing that has struck me as worth betting on but today strikes me as different:

Young Dottie Lingfield 2.30 12/s with Ladbrokes EW could prove worthwhile.

It's no wonder they called it off at Doncaster today - the ground must be like a road.

Two course records from what I can work out yesterday - Mostly Bob & King Of The Night took 5 seconds off the old ones & the former's was twenty years old.

I wouldn't get too carried away with them (famous last words beckons but) as that's the kind of ground that can wreck a horses legs - I note neither Wogan or Killyglen have won since their course record run at the same track last year.

One for the notebook would be Adam's Island - the horse that beat Mostly Bob [on my figs was 9lb clear top rated on that run & sure bolstered the form] last time.

We seem to have kissed & made up at the RP - :heartshape1: - we're at least talking again & Always Right has been accredited his course record:

Please also find Dave Edward's response to your query over the Always Right's Grimthorpe Chase time.

"Yes, it was a course record but really it is for information purposes only and not much credence should be paid to it as rail realignment more than likely contributed to it. Records particularly over jumps have questionable relevance with all the rail changes which either shrink or stretch our elasticated courses. Not ideal but we are where we are."

If the King George hadn't been moved into January this year, then Long Run would have been the first 5yo for 60 years to win it and he did so in a time faster than 3 of Kauto Star's. Then he becomes the first 6yo to win a Gold Cup, in course record time too, amazing, brilliant....

How can a horse break a 10 year-old course record, beat absolute legends in the process, carry 11lb more than the winner (officially rated 145 with a 7lb claimer on) of the Grand Annual & come away with a 2lb/pt higher speed figure, according to the Racing Post:anerikke:

This little fiasco just cost my Over The Jumps thread a 3/1 winner today - as stuck between those two races was the Foxhunter run over the same CD as Gold Cup - I suppose the RP couldn't accord Long Run a worthy speed figure without giving Zemsky one either, whose race was made by the pace setting Baby Run, whose rating I should have upped but after all the head-scratching just got left, he should have been a clear top rated today & not a joint top - maybe we get some money back with Zemsky.......???

Fascinating contest today at Chester, what with humble Musselbrough course record breaker, Harris Tweed, of last year taking on the one-time Derby favourite, St Nicholas Abbey, in the Ormonde...

It might be that North Star Boy who had Charles The Great 9l's behind last time is the major find here but here is a great way to identify a top notch 2yo -

It should be safe to assume that Bated Breath ran to his mark of 108 while breaking the track record here but while carrying the same weight & on only his second start, Charles The Great, was not far behind in taking the juvenile equivalent - this little technique worked fine with Strong Suit last year - and the weight-for-age scale at this time of year gives the 2yo anything up to 23lb over his elder but can't see him reversing the form with North Star Boy though but can see him landing a pattern class race during this season.

He was actually my top rated on that run here but I couldn't see him beating 5 previous winners on only his 2nd start but

Or perhaps a Wetherbys Super Sprint even - shame he was only my 2nd top rated but he was the only Crse Rec breaker in the field:ermmm

I think the ground must have dried out on Meeznah's day as in the end Frankel comes out as Champion the Wonder horse.

Here's an interesting one as Primevere, yesterday broke track record at Salisbury but had previously, first time out as a 2yo taken a track record at Kempton - the mark she got from me yesterday is now the same as the former Kempton track record holder:

I'm afraid there has been another omission - don't know whether I was too busy or because it was lowly Folkstone [carried 10 stone & rated 69] I didn't pay it much heed but what a little story unfolding here - this is the Racing Post Analysis from last week:

"HUNT BALL arrived looking the most-improved chaser of the season having made it 5-6 for the campaign at Huntingdon last weekend. He was upped to a mark of 127 after that and thus was a whopping 58lb higher than when initially winning back in November. He was still expected to take this rise in class in his stride, with connections intent on getting him qualified for a handicap at Cheltenham next month, and going to the trouble of booking Barry Geraghty. The 7yo´s jumping was not so clever early on, but he was much more assured as the race went on and it was clear four from home he was in control. Geraghty confidently sent him on in the home straight and he produced a mighty leap at the last. The winner has two options at the festival, both over this trip, and another likely rise for this should ensure he takes his place there. He acts on any ground, is clearly still ahead of the handicapper and it certainly wouldn´t surprise to see him go in again next month as that track shouldn´t pose him many problems."

Crazy! Hunt Ball - starts the season on 69 & yesterday got 164 from me & now they're talking next year's Gold Cup! :yikes: It's possible he may be the most improved chaser in one season ever...

But there were two recent course record breakers to win at Cheltenham Tuesday, Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle too...

& God knows what the ground would be like without all the watering, the last 3 times a race has been run over this CD the record been broken & yesterday by 10 seconds, meaning the track record for 31f is now faster than that for 32f... Could have been a good run by Philip Hobbs' horse being only an 8yo but nothing to rate against, gave 155?

Will be doing an updated list of most recent record breakers perhaps end of season.

Will most definitely doing a list ASAP as I fluffed up here missing recent course record breaker, Attaglance, who won the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockey's Handicap Hurdle.

I was gutted about this race as I had a strong fancy for Hobbs' Big Easy & pretty much ignored it when I saw he wasn't running but I knew I had another noted for the race but couldn't remember [even though I had him high-lighted as the only runner who had this as his Big Race Target (http://horseracingx.wordpress.com/2012/03/18/big-race-targets-cheltenham/)]

So when I scrolled down my ratings for the race to find the winner [he was 14th top?], I'm nearly in tears to read:

I suppose Ikorodu Road's would be the most significant, he ran the furthest & took just as much, more than 4 seconds off the previous, and beat the most long-standing record (that of old Topsham Bay & could be a pointer to the Whitbread/365?).

Seems like they could do with some water/rain at Newbury, track records been broken at the last 3 meets so these might not hold much significance?

[Have also included Tante Sissi's race, as while she didn't break a record, she clocked bigger figs than two of them?]

"The ground appeared quicker than the previous day, with Tony McCoy confirming it to be "drying all the time". The rails were in and the course was at its tightest configuration, leading to several course record times on the day."

Well that didn't last long did it? Should never have been favourite today imho, classic case of being thrown in the deep end upped to Group company from a handicap to find out how good he is. He'll have a better chance in pattern class when he comes back off a bigger break is my guess.

Interesting again here, making debut for new yard, another ex-Mark Johnston horse (I reckon they were profitable to follow over in Dubai this last winter at least) takes nearly 3 seconds off the recent record. Here's another good one the last track record breaker here was a 5yo in Oct 10 won 4 times since including twice again this year but today a 3yo & what with 3yo weight for age allowance comes out as easily pattern class possible & only 4th start for a trainer who has a habit of producing quality sprinters, like Tangerine Trees & Our Jonathon -

& you don't often see that comment, 'blitzed clear,' in the race notes - a sprinter to follow for sure [was also put up as such by today's jockey Tom Eaves in a Weekender interview last year], especially when fresh though not sure yet?

FANTASTIC RACE BETWEEN SHADOW GATE AND ERNEST HEMMINGWAY

A couple of years ago Takashi Kodama produced a remarkable training performance when he won a race at the Galway Festival with nine year old Pop Rock, the former Japanese star that had come within a short head of winning the Melbourne Cup four years earlier.

Earlier this week at Dundalk he topped even that effort when taking a conditions race with ten year old SHADOW GATE (40/120) who had won the Singapore Airlines Cup way back in 2007.

Shadow Gate was held up off the furious gallop set by Ernest Hemmingway then stayed on late to collar that one when he tired up the straight. In doing so he broke the course record for Dundalk's 1m 2f & 150 yards by nearly half a second to produce what I rate a solid Group 2 class effort.

If Taksahi Kodama can produce Shadow Gate in the same sort of form next year he might just be able to break the record set by 10yo Yavana's Pace ten years ago and become the oldest horse ever to win a Group 1 flat race.

The race was notable for the astonishing pace set by the Coolmore colt ERNEST HEMMINGWAY (38/114).

By taking the times at each furlong marker and then using the speeds in between to calculate the other seventy yards I estimate that Ernest Hemmingway ran the first seven furlongs 0.7 of a second faster than the winner of the seven furlong 60-95 handicap, which I rated the next fastest race on the card. He ran the first mile only a fifth of a second slower than the track record for that distance. And he reached the three furlong marker an almost impossible 5.9 seconds earlier than they did in the truly run handicap over the same trip won by Raydari, who is now two for two on Polytrack.

Running up to the three furlong marker Ernest Hemmingway really opened up on his rivals to blast six and a half lengths clear. He was full of running and looked uncatchable at that point. But soon afterwards the pace began to tell and he was steadily reeled in by his pursuers, though only the former Japanese star actually managed to catch him.

On his previous start in the Arc Ernest Hemmingway ran tremendously fast for the first nine and a half furlongs, taking the field along at a pace that made me happy to award him a rating of 40 for his effort up to that point. If they'd stopped this race after nine and a half furlongs he'd have earned the same rating from me again.

If he were mine I'd be giving serious thought to running Ernest Hemmingway in the Premio Roma next month. His performance for the first mile and a quarter in the Arc showed that he can act on the soft ground that race is usually run on, and it would give him a real shot of securing a Group 1 win.

Hopefully Ernest Hemmingway will stay in training next season. Ridden with a little more restraint he could well become one of the top ten furlong horses in Europe, with the Prix Ganay being an obvious early target. Trainer Aidan O'Brien has won that race twice in recent seasons."

What a bunch of nob heads on C4 writing this off as a useless trial, I can remember them showing Clive Brittain backing Miblish for a Group race last year:

Going to try & post the last most recent 100 course record breakers & see how the formatting comes out.

The last one to run & win was the Romford Pele the other day, hard to keep track of things as so busy but I always keep my google doc updated: here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlfvxfAgl1dDdEtwaHRqTllzRlRvLWNuSTNLalAyTUE&usp=drive_web#gid=0), if anyone's interested>

Total Chaos at Wetherby November 1st - there's been a big hoo ha? since.

Does Menorah stay 3m?

I thought there'd be questions as too many records were going too often with no explanation. I copied this from the Racing Post website soon after but since all the fuss the three new record breakers have all been stripped:

If you visit the Wetherby Course Records now it's like the day never happened at all:

""3. MENORAH has suddenly become a robust 3m+ beast…

Well…um…except he hasn’t really, has he?

In fairness to the horse he did almost win the Betfair Bowl at Aintree a couple of season’s back but even then he didn’t really look a horse that was crying out for a 3 mile trip, generally looking the sort that would be susceptible to a more robust staying type.

With that in mind I’m sure I wasn’t the only one scratching my head when Menorah romped home with the 3m1f Charlie Hall Chase on Saturday.

The alarms bells should have started ringing when the Hobbs horse broke the course record.

That course record time changed it from ‘how did that happen’ to ‘how the HELL did that happen!’.

I was ready, although not all that happy, to mark it down as just ‘one of those things’, an early season anomaly, a horse that was potentially more forward on the day than his opponents.

That was until I read Simon Rowlands latest Timeform article ‘Rowleyfile investigates: What is going on at Wetherby? (https://www.timeform.com/Racing/Articles/Rowleyfile_investigates_What_is_going_on_at_Wetherby)‘.

Now that Charlie Hall Chase result starts to make a bit more sense.

It wasn’t a 3m1f race, it was more like a 2m7.5f race. That’s significant. That’s very significant in fact. That’s pretty much a different race.

From my perspective it’s a bit of a ball-ache. The Charlie Hall is a race I analyse from a Dosage perspective. The Charlie Hall figures are based on the race being a 3m1f race (or as near enough to that to not make a significant difference).

Stamina clearly isn’t quite as paramount over 2m7.5f as it is over 3m1f. Menorah didn’t have to dig as deep into his limited stamina reserves as would normally have been expected.

Come on Wetherby, get it sorted! It’s a hard enough game without the distances being completely wrong!

Treat that Charlie Hall Chase form with a large pinch of salt.

A number of tracks have been found to have the wrong distances. Very annoying since measuring them is simple. All you need is a wheel and a stick, but that seems to be too complicated for some course managers.

One thing that annoys me is on tracks who move the rails by a wide margin, and do not move the start. sometimes it can add a couple of hundred yards to a race. :ermmm

The thing that annoys me the most :voodoo:::swear people that get paid to do it, Dave Edwards of TopSpeed from the Racing Post for example, don't even notice

They like to keep things as simple as possible, so choose to ignore a lot of variables hoping it all evens out in the end. Maybe they do, but on a single race they can make the figures a waste of time.

Looks like the Racing Post Ratings are going to be the most reliable over jumps at least for a year or two?

National trip revised as jump tracks remeasured

BY TOM KERR 1:40PM 6 MAY 2015

THE advertised trip of next year's Crabbie's Grand National will be a furlong shorter than previous due to a new method of measuring race distances that makes the course of the world's most famous chase 4m2½f.

Dozens of races will technically be run over shorter distances, and 11 tracks unable to adjust their start positions have been given dispensation to run races over less than the minimum distance of two miles.

The new methodology has been introduced to improve accuracy in race distances, according to the BHA and Racecourse Association (RCA), who together published the new measurements on Wednesday.

Under the new system the race distance has been calculated by professional surveyors measuring a racing line two yards off the innermost running rail, rather than along the mid-point of the course using a surveyor's wheel as under the previous system.

The revised measurements will be advertised from June 1. Each race will then have two distances: one a precise figure accurate to the yard, the other a figure rounded to the nearest half-furlong, as under the previous system.

Jamie Stier, BHA director of raceday operations and regulation, said: "This project was instigated to bring the measurement of jump races in line with the methodology already used to measure Flat races, and ensure greater accuracy of jump-race distances."

Caroline Davies, racecourse services director for the RCA, added: "For jump racing in particular, it is essential that clerks of the course have the scope to move running rails so as to provide the best possible racing surface especially during periods of inclement weather.

"Having a base measurement means that changes to race distances can be advertised more accurately, particularly if late changes to the racing line are necessary due to dolling out."

The National shrunk from 4m4f to 4m3½f in 2013 when the start was moved further from the stands for safety reasons, but on this occasion the start and the course remain the same as it is simply the method of measuring that has trimmed the distance.

The greatest change to a race distance is at Market Rasen, where a 4m3½f chase will now be run over over 4m2f.

Some racecourses have adjusted start positions to reflect advertised distances. At other tracks official race distances have been reduced.

There are 11 courses where the minimum trip will now be under two miles, including Ascot, Haydock and Sandown. Ayr will now host the shortest jumps race in Britain, a 1m7f112y chase.

Stier added: "Where dispensation has been granted it is important to note that the distances of the races in question have not changed – they will be run over the exact same course as previously – nor is this an indication that the races were previously run over the wrong distance. Simply the new methodology, which follows a tighter line, naturally means that the advertised distances will be shorter.

"Where this revised distance was less than two miles alterations, if possible, were made to start positions, however in the 11 cases this was not possible, so the only options were to delete the races from the programme or provide exemptions to the rule."
