    place cut-off

I posted something similar recently, but go no answers, so here goes again:) Im trying to figure out a good cut-off point for laying in the place market.
In the normal market my cut-off is 10.5.

So would I be right to divide 10.5 by 3, which gives a cut-off of 3.5?
Im not the best ever at maths so any help would be appreciated in working out how to 'convert' 10.5 to the place market, presuming that the payout is on the first 3 horses

    Thanks

Not sure you can work it like that Wayne.

When there is a long odds-on jolly the win odds for the rest of the field will be high. But in most markets 2 other nags will place and it may well not be the next 2 in the win betting market. If you are nowhere near beating the leader you may ease up slightly and lose momentum and even a place.

I would record data and experiment with cut-offs and see what works. I reckon you would be OK cutting of significantly higher than 3.5 but without trying it I can't be sure. That's my gut feeling though

Thanks mathare, I tried (dismally) to get money out of the backing side of the place market. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be! I have a place lay system set up and ready for trial, but need to decide cut-offs etc. I guess a trial and error on paper would be the best way to go about this.

Do you mean divide the lay price in the normal market by 5?

It all depends on the strength of why I believe its a lay as to liability I accept, but I dont like to be above 5 in place market.

ok. The lays I have are from a system, so It's not really my opinion as such. I suppose a cut-off of 5 would be a good place to start. As I say, its only paper at the mo

    thanks for that

I can make profit in place market only by making sure I have a strong case to lay, so I lay less in this way. Its much harder than straight not to win.

    Good Luck
