I saw some RAM on e-bay and it appeared cheap enough.
Where is the best place to buy RAM, and how do I know what to ask for
Do I need to know the make of the PC?
(Im no computer genius as you may have gathered by now)

You need to know what the motherboard will support, or what you have in at present.
I tend to get my RAM from Ebuyer as that way I know I am getting the real deal and they won't rip me off
Sorry mat, I'm really useless at this sort of thing. How do I find out what I have, and what the motherboard will support. My lack of PC knowledge is embarrasing for a 25 year oldOriginally Posted by mathare

Use the tool here

.
You ought to be able to find out somewhere through the operating system I would have thought but I'm not really sure where. Mine is a self-build so I know exactly what all the components areOriginally Posted by wbailey
WB,
Is your machine a standard build machine (ie a Gateway Performance 1234, or Dell 9150) or one you have cobbled together yourself?
If it is a standard one you could try:
www.mrmemory.co.uk
They have a flow-chart to use to determine what type of RAM your machine was built with (if it was a standard built one).
They will also undercut any price you find elsewhere which is cheaper than them.
I have used them....customer service good.

Thanks guys.
Ada, the computer is one I bought. I would not have a clue how to put one together, which is a shame. I want to learn more though, and am picking up a few 'lessons' from a friend soon.

I've used that one on Crucial's site, no problems with it. It's a useful wee program if you're not sure what memory type you need, and of course you don't actually have to buy it from them!
