kill bill was a good film though
yeah the western kung-fu comedies are pretty

Think Stephen Chow is in drunken masters although i may be mistaken

You should check out Shaolin Soccer (cracked me up no end after a little smoke.... ) and Kung Fu Hustle.

I'm trying to get some of his earlier film imported but its proving quite difficult at the moment

But it's a 50 films you must see....not a 50 of the most aesteticly pleasing films ever made.

It's just a personal choice but Shaun scored a home run for me anyway...

Not all good films but ones that have cracking surround sound or amazingly realistic effects:
    Black Hawk Down
    Matrix
    King Kong
    Saving Private Ryan

    Visually stunning films:
    Traffic
    True Romance
    Ocean's Eleven

    Jaw-dropping special effects/car chases/etc:
    Gladiator
    Kill Bill
    House of Flying Daggers
    Ronin
    Bullit

Genuinely great films that will stand the test of time:
All of the Lord of the Rings
    French Connection I and II
    Oh Brother Where Art Thou
    Leon
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
    Apocalypse Now
    The Untouchables
    Almost every Ealing comedy made

Agree with a lot of the above, but as a fan of the gangster genre my all time faves would be The Godfather (all three) and Goodfellas. More recently trendy is the cockney gangster theme and here the unmissables are:

Sexy Beast (awesome performance from Ben Kingsley)
    The Business
Love, Honour and Obey (more violent comedy than outright gangster stuff)

The Krays would be there if it hadn't been spoilt by such crap casting.

You have to get up before the birds and crap on the doorstep if you want to see buffalo playing pinball in the spring.

Scum - looks quite dated nowadays but a must see (IMHO).

House of Flying Daggers (as mentioned by Glos) - stunning film with strong storylines and a very neat twist to a complex plot - should be watched at a cinema with the original subtitles.

Cool Hand Luke - just a darned good movie.

Blackboard Jungle (or just about any Sidney Poitier film will do).

Stir Crazy - possibly the funniest film I have ever seen!
