    2012 olympic stadium

what a discrace this is, spending £500 million (and no doupt that figure will rise) on a 25k seater stadium with 55k tempory seats, for a running track.

nobody in this country gives a about running / field sports, so why go so overboard on something that only has a use for a few weeks when the olympics is on.

and after the olympics it will be turned into a 25k seater running track, whats the point of that? nobody cares about running in this country, it is simply not a spectator sport to rival the likes of rugby, football, cricket etc....

why not make it into a football stadium? the 'city of manchester stadium' was built for the commonwealth games with the purpose of turning it into a football stadium when the games were over, now the stadium gets gates of upto 60k every other week, and has a usefull function.

i am really pissed off with this huge waste of cash, so the londeners who are paying fore it must be fuming

I totally agree, but what football team would move there?

Chelsea / Spurs / Fulham are just not East End, Arsenal have just built a new stadium, Charlton have upgraded the Valley. That just leaves WHam. Sounds good to me, the further away they are the less likely I am to give in when my brother in law invites me along (£40+ to watch that crap ).

i think WHU wanted to use it and showed interest.
even if they only build a 60,000 stadium for the purpose of turning it into a footy ground, it still has to make more sense than what they are proposing now - especially as WHU could pay something towards the costs.

It would also go well for any world cup bid (2014) to have another world class stadium.

It's only our hard earned taxes paying for it so what's the problem?

Luckily we all got to vote YES for it

West Ham were in serious negotiatians to take over the stadium after the Olympics. They are very close to Newham Council and thus the local political support was there and many detailed community use plans were on the table to provide the 'legacy' that the authorities want.

But Red Ken says no and West Ham are to build a 50,000 stadium in Canning Town instead and the taxpayer will be left with a white elephant 25,000 athletics stadium, used maybe two or three times a year by about 300 people......

You couldn't make this stuff up :splapme

Red Ken and the Olympic committee whould be taken to task for the willful waste of OUR money. Its a disgrace frankly

Orient have been offered it, but even WE don't want it

The main concerns being that we would have to leave the running track in,
which is an immediate no goer for any fotball stadium!

During the last world championships, or whatever they were, for athletics in Sweden I think it was, the stadium was less than 5% full!!!!

Well apparently, it is a "certainty" that Leyton Orient wil move into the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 games! :(

It may be a step forward, but grounds with a runing track...

I'm not so certain at this point, but I suppose we do need a move to
try and tempt more than the current 5,ooo maximum we attact at the moment.

I also suppose a revertion back to just "Orient" would be in order!

mr hern seemed keen to get it when orient were last on telly. i suppose they could turn your ground into apartments - they have already done half the job :wink

(no offence to vegy / any other orient fan - for this next bit)
this just confirms what a waste of money this stadium is going to be, half a billion quid for a stadium to watch the likes of leyton orient. for sake. five hundred million quid to give 5000 fans a view of a footy game in an empty stadium.

i agree with some of the posts regarding the financing of the stadium as usual the govt have messed up agian, but all this country seems to care about is football, football, football, and yet all we produce is mediocrity and pay them a kings ramson for doing for it..Now i know i'm getting of the point but if we could produce a stadium of excellance for athletes to train and perform it may encourage youngsters that there's more to life than football.

What needs to happen is a plan devised for the aftermath of the olympics, so all these facilities being built can be utilised..no wait until after and let things rot.
Look whats happened to the Dome , its now being used for a number of events sporting and non sporting and seems to becoming popular again so its not impossible..

i have nothing against the building of a 'quality' running track + facilities. But lets face it athletics cannot draw a croud, so building a stadium for a running track is simply not nessasary,
i am sure plenty of running tracks could be build in public parks around the country at a fraction of the cost for this olympic stadium.

Typical white elephant regardless of what government is in power, they all do it. What annoys me even more is the use of lottery money to build it.

A 25,000 capacity stadium with a running track around the outside and 5,000 fans inside.....

Boy that is going to be some atmosphere!

Maybe we could use it as a home ground for South American teams to play their friendlies as they seem to play in europe now as all their players play over here! :D

That way we get decent football played there instead of those Leyton boys :wink

Can you imagine Orient in the Prem? When they visit Man U, where would Alex fit in all 33 away supporters? :D
