The Men Who Jump Off Buildings- Ch 4

As somebody who is petrified of heights, I saw a clip of this on channel 4 the other night and thought I have to catch it. I really don't know what goes through their minds but I wish I was on some of what they are!

DOCUMENTARY: The Men Who Jump Off Buildings
    On: Channel 4 (104)
    Date: Wednesday 28th July 2010
    Time: 21:00 to 22:00

Dan Witchalls and Ian Richardson are addicted to the world's most deadly adrenaline sport: base jumping. Cutting Edge follows one of Britain's most prolific base jumpers and his right-hand man, as they leap from the top of some of the country's most famous landmarks, escaping death by pulling their parachute cord just seconds from impact. 'Base' is a secretive, underground community that likes to play while the city sleeps, and the 'bandit jumpers', as Dan and Ian are known, cruise the streets, searching for buildings to sneak into, climb up and jump from.

Along these lines did anyone ever see a bbc programme about some French free runners? I think it was on maybe 4-5 years ago (although with Scooby's mentioning of the office being 10 years old perhaps it was 50 years ago, who knows!) They invited them to come and run across the top of London buildings and filmed them. Some of what they did was incredible.

No didn't see it Matt but sounds good. Have you still got it on betamax? I don't know why I like watching these things as it makes me go funny when they look over the edge, terrifying!

Sounds a bit pathetic to me.

I mean, I jumped off my garden wall when I was younger, and I didn't even have a parachute!

I suppose it makes a change from people breaking into buildings late at night to rob them!

The French freerunning programme was fantastic. To think of how much training must have gone into practicing the techniques and to consider how agile the freerunners must be is pretty incredible. Also they're dicing with such danger on every jump or drill they make, it obviously requires a great deal of accuracy and precision. Yeah, I really want to watch it again. I'm sure if I searched YouTube I'd find plenty of videos showing it so perhaps this is something I should take another look at.

Thanks for your PM, Matt, I will reply tomorrow at some stage... but for now – yes, a highly recommended place! :)

It seems to be in French apart form a bit of narration in English.

I am surprised that so many of these institutions let them do it aren't you? Did they say it was done in 2002 or 03? Do you think it has taken off as much as they hoped it would do?

Yes I think I heard 2003 mentioned in the video. There seems to be quite a lot of videos on their of people doing similar stuff but whether it's taken off in a big way I'm not sure. This one was pretty impressive although it seemed more individual moves rather than 'free running' as such

Seeming though my thread had been hijacked...getting back to 'The Men Who Jump Off Buildings'! Did anybody see this last night? The guy has balls of steel or is mentally ill, I am not sure which yet. He keeps losing jumping partners, the death rate for base jumping is 1 in 6 I think yet he has made nearly close to 1000 jumps! His mate had 2 really bad injuries in the timespan of the programme and yet he seems to get away with it everytime. Even though I could never understand how someone could do it with my fear of heights, you have to admire the balls. & if I was him, if it was a choice between getting up on a freezing morning to jump a building or that pretty Danish thing next to him...not sure there would be much of a choice to be honest!

I agree with you mate, he is nuts. Just watched the programme and couldn't believe some of the things he has to do just to make the jumps. Avoiding motion sensors at Nelson's Column for example! The whole concept is fascinating but at the same time it's absurdly crazy. A death rate of 1 in 6 and he made over 800 jumps. Can't imagine what must go the pretty Danish girlfriend's mind each night...

Finally got around to watching this. He's totally addicted isn't he? He will never stop until it stops him. He seems a risk taker with it which would appear to be a recipe for disaster! As for the other guy, hasn't he got the message yet after two crashes? I think he seemed more retiscent to do it but gets drawn into it. It must be quite something to do. I don't have a fear of heights but I don't think I could bring myself to jump off a building. Not sure why the girlfriend sticks with him though. She must wonder if he's going to make it back every time, pretty selfish to put her through that and it's not as if it's a rare occurence either, 800 plus jumps wasn't it?
