Eeh, I'm wipin' a tear from me eye as I'm reminded of British Leyland. It were a right shame that things didn't work out at BL, and after all, the trade union leaders were reasonable men, the workers were willing to do owt to stay in a job, and the cars were just great.
Aye, that'll be right. Rabble rousing union bosses who'd call a strike at the drop of a hat - one of literally hundreds of strikes was over an extra 5 minute tea break being removed - guys who thought the world owed them a living, and neither seeing that acting like spoilt kids would see their jobs hoovered up by overseas firms, who knew what it took to survive in the real world. Add to this cars you could only rely on to build your muscles as you shoved them to the nearest garage and it was the original recipe for disaster.
The equivalent of eleven billion pounds was pumped into Leyland - even the despised Maggie Thatcher was willing to bail them out - and the whole business still went down the toilet. Thank God the Japanese know what they're about with motor manufacturing and are willing to bring some badly needed jobs to Britain.
