    Top Weights in Handicaps

    Q. I am working on a horse racing system based on weights for handicap races. I would like to know what percentage of top weights win in handicaps?

    A. The strike rate figure will vary depending on the number of runners. Here are some stats for different field sizes:

    2yo Nursery Top Weights
10 or less runners 22.3% strike rate, 9% loss
    11 or more runners 10.9%, 26% loss

    3yo Handicaps Top Weights
10 or less runners 20.1% strike rate, 13% loss
    11 or more runners 11.3%, 23% loss

    3yo+ Handicaps Top Weights
10 or less runners 17.3% strike rate, 3% loss
    11 or more runners 9.2%, 24% loss

You can generate this information yourself via the Race Stats section. Change the form to show handicaps (and either 2yo, 3yo races etc.) and click GO to see the report. On the report there will be a section showing the position in the weights and the stats for it.

You can if you wish generate a report for different field sizes, classes, distances and goings as these can have an impact on the figures.

e.g. Top weights in handicaps will perform much better in firm ground races than soft ground races.
