I got hold of RSB today. Interesting but I need more time. I wopuld dearly love to use it to backtest the following but need more time and support.

Aplogies for being short with Mathare! He knows at leat 10,000 times what I know and so already feel pretty dumb without being reminded.

    Still trying!

    Shortlisting:
    1. I select horses which are CD (Course and Distance) winners
    2. I select those which are in the top 3 rated OR (official rating).

    * This usually leaves me with 3 to 5 races to focus on!

    3. I then apply the following 'filters' (variables)

    a) Month (based on Boss data)
    b) RPR difference
    c) Number of runners (<15)
    d) Change in class (up (-) and down (+))
    e) Draw (using Adrain Massey)
    f) % jockey wins in (similar) races last season as a whole
    g) % trainer wins in (similar) races last season as a whole
    h) Forecast odds (low odds + vs high odds -)
    i) Place last time out (LTO) in similar race class, distance and going
    j) OR (now) and LTO in similar class and race

I weight these factors differently and am testing it on level stakes of 3% of a £1000 bank.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks again

    Steve

Are you taking into account race types?

If you are blindly taking the top 3 OR horses in a handicap, you are heading for the poorhouse. You may hear the phrase 'the handicapper has got a hold of him/her' in pre-race commentaries and this means that the horse has gone up in the weights to a point where it is unlikely to be competitive against improving runners.

If you are using OR as a factor, you should probably take handicaps out of the equation.

fadetolack says "For a while Racehorse it's probably best to avoid maiden races altogether. Stick to handicaps and listed races."

    Agree or disagree and why?

Does the time of day effect the race. I have noticed that fav tend to lose more races when the event is in the evening, say after 6pm? Anyone got stats on that? Cheers Steve

It just appears that way, no statistical change long term.

    Pay them :D

It's not cheap, nor is it a licence to print money, you have to understand what you are doing.

Hi matunty,I once used a system using c/d as a start point.Rules as follows.
    Handicap races only all codes.
Any c/d winner that is running of an official rating the same or below its last winning mark
acheived in the last 2 years only & the same code as todays race ,but dosent have to be c/d.
If more than 1 qualifier in a race the selection is the horse highest in the weights.
This system produced some good priced winners.
No stats to back this up I chop and change every 10 minutes & get bored if I dont have selections every day.

The CD course and distance winner is a proven factor .. .. You need also promising factor and progressive factor .. .. The recent form is very important in this matter .. .. You must also concentrate on first 3 in betting forecast (or tied by any newspaper) and top 3 rated (or tied by any newspaper's form rating service )
